Witkowski Family in Upstate New York

wit-138

"Love will hold us together Make us a shelter to weather the storm And I'll be my brother's keeper So the whole world would know that we're not alone.

It's waiting for you knocking at your door In the moment of truth when your heart hits the floor And you're on your knees.

Love will hold us together Make us a shelter to weather the storm And I'll be my brother's keeper So the whole world would know that we're not alone.

This is the first day of the rest of your life 'Cause even in the dark you can still see the light It's gonna be alright."

-Song lyrics by Matt Maher, Hold Us Together.

wit-133

i could easily write a novel about my love for this family. we first met when they hired me to photograph them at their home in new york last year while also graciously inviting my whole family to have a slumber party weekend with them while traveling on the road. together, our kids caught minnows in their lake, ran through tall grass, searched for bear tracks at golden hour and shared pancakes and heart stories in the wee hours of the morning. we all quickly became good friends and they surely took up permanent residence inside my heart. the way they live is, in itself, a ministry. they bleed such beautiful grace, and it is shown in their determination to keep marching onward, together. i had the honor of photographing them again a few weeks ago during my bloomville, new york workshop at the turquoise barn and i could not have possibly imagined a better example of authentic gratitude for my attendees to learn from than them.

the above song lyrics, they told me, have been their family's anthem this past year and what strength there are in those words; making the everyday beautiful and whole no matter what the season... Love will hold us together, make us a shelter to weather the storm. And I'll be my brother's keeper so the whole world would know that we're not alone.

Wildflowers Workshop Reunion Party!

reunion-226 when i began teaching workshops a few years back, i never imagined the community that would grow as the fruit from my taking that first step towards telling my story.  these women have become some of my best friends.  they are the real deal.  they are honest and brave and gentle and strong.  they are mothers and sisters and artists and dreamers.

apart we are a flame trying to stay lit, but together the fires of creation burn wild and free; it can be intoxicating!  something happens when women gather that stirs the soul.  i think oftentimes the attendees arrive dry and simply just wanting more.  out of life and the art of photo taking and quietly hoping for someone to perhaps give them the permission to do that one amazing thing that they never thought they'd be brave enough to do.

reunion-145

i've had the honor of seeing women release years of burdens piled upon their own shoulders, i've watched galleries be unveiled and passion projects emerge from the women that perhaps came with the most fear.  because i teach, i feel so strongly about never becoming stagnant in in own personal art.  for me to inspire others i must always be inching closer and closer towards my own truth to tell the story of my own family and those of my clients' in the most heartfelt and focused way.

not too long ago i felt a personal shift in me occurring and, since, i have been so open with my workshop attendees about my personal feelings and the evolution in my own photography.  that fire burning within me for true authenticity in imagery.  i never want to stop digging.  what a gift i have been given in facilitating an experience that fills my own cup, time and time again, while also giving these women a place to feel safe enough let their fires rise up and burn brightly from the ashes.

reunion-102

we opened up our home to all of my past workshop attendees from over the years and scheduled it while our apple orchards were in peak harvest season.  basically, we put on a big party… lots of hard apple cider, dancing in the pouring rain, good comfort food, sleeping on stacks of quilts and laughing into the wee hours, coffee on the porch, apple crumbles with vanilla ice cream and balsamic reduction for a midnight snack and crying and bonding and catching up and sitting in the hot tub beneath a rainstorm and picking flowers and resting and just letting it all go.

it was glorious.  the second day was pretty wet so we picked up a bunch of the maple leaves from the yard, left our muddy boots by the door, everyone dried their leaves by the wood stove and then we started to paint them.

reunion-103 reunion-104 reunion-105 reunion-106

i dug out all our kid craft supplies and the most imperfectly perfect wildflower crowns were created.  i think a good flower crown brings out the giddiness in a lady because from there on there was a bit of magic in the air as we danced in the orchards and then sat beneath the willow tree by the pond and each spoke about our journeys toward gratitude.   reunion-108 reunion-117 reunion-118reunion-280reunion-147 reunion-151 reunion-155 these women are incredible.  i didn't properly document each woman but i will hold them dear to my heart always.  (and take a lot more photos at the next reunion!)reunion-159 reunion-163 reunion-165 reunion-166 reunion-167 reunion-169 reunion-170 reunion-178 reunion-180 reunion-182 reunion-183 reunion-184 reunion-187 reunion-188 reunion-190 reunion-201 reunion-206 reunion-208 reunion-215 reunion-216 reunion-217.3 reunion-217.4 reunion-217 reunion-218.4reunion-222reunion-231 reunion-237 reunion-244 reunion-246 reunion-247 reunion-251 reunion-252 reunion-253 reunion-255 reunion-256reunion-259 reunion-262reunion-269 reunion-270reunion-101

a few of my favorite wildflowers also wrote and documented their time at this reunion party and i would be so honored for you to go visit their posts and enjoy their gorgeous photos and soak in their heartwarming words about the wildflowers workshop & reunion experience (they documented more than i did of the whole 3 days).  here are the links to four posts about the reunion in particular that made me laugh and cry all at once:

Apples & Honey Photography - Kelsey Clark,

Paper Deer Photo - Jayme Ford,

As Ever Photography - Jenny Corbett,

Sarah Libby Photography - Sarah Thompson

and you MUST watch this breathtaking video that amy teague at happily situated created with footage from this reunion.  i adore the feeling and the motion of it all so much!

Workshop announcement: at OUR house: Oct. 1-2

workshop announcement!!!  registration is currently open for: a wildflowers workshop this october 1-2 here on our homestead in bellingham, washington!  and it will be a glorious time of year with our apple orchard full of apples.  the workshop will begin at 9am on wednesday, october 1st and end at about 3pm on thursday, october 2nd. proutymay-342web

my hope for the workshop: for each woman who attends be challenged as a photographer, a creator, a business person and most importantly, an artist! i want each attendee to remember the simple and passion-driven reason they fell in love with photography and to inspire their creative spirit in fresh ways as well as give practical tools to run their business from the heart.  so often in this profession, we start out loving the art of making pictures and then all the beauty of the journey gets lost in trying to make it work as a business. i want to share my journey, be an open book to you... i am a believer in raw honesty and that is exactly how i teach. it is a beautiful few days and i truly believe that every woman that attends leaves changed, encouraged, and equipped to grow their business and images into the wonderland they envision in their minds.

the investment: this workshop will be $1400 per attendee.   this total cost will cover:  all instruction and education over the course of our time together, meals during the workshop teaching, and my workshop book i have written specifically for attendees in addition to other things.  the workshop fee does not include travel or lodging.  however, we facilitate the private forum for attendees to get to know one another prior to the workshop to arrange sharing these expenses.  we recommend flying into bellingham airport as it is very close to us, however seattle airport is only two hours south of us and it's a beautiful drive along the washington coast heading up to us here!  to register, we require a nonrefundable 50% retainer to reserve your spot - paid by paypal below (this intimate at-home workshop will cap at 12 women total), and the remaining 50% is due one month prior to the workshop.

what is covered in the workshop: two portrait sessions with instruction given start to finish (one family session and one couple session), the sharing of how i dive deeper into the stories and passions of my clients to create unique photo shoots that speak to the heart, how to set boundaries, effective policies and how to "balance it all" - business, workflow, time management, family, relationships and still keep your sanity. inspiration for staying fresh and setting yourself apart from other photographers. how to best utilize your existing space and tips on finding great hidden gems of locations. how to get creative with the way you shoot with capturing sun flare and finding dreamy light to produce sun-saturated imagery. raw workflow demonstration in lightroom and photoshop and my start to finish post production technique. strategies for setting rates for your business and how to stick firm to them. i cover strategic marketing techniques on how to attract and book your target clientele. how to pose children, families and couples in a comfortable "un-posey" way. how to develop lasting relationships with local business owners and how to get your work displayed in creative locations. we do lots of creative and inspirational challenges to help attendees discover their own personal photographic style. the client planning consultation, how to create storyboards, the complete client interaction process.  you leave with hundreds of images taken to add to your portfolio. the attendees develop life-long relationships with each other, it is so beautiful! all of my previous workshop attendees have kept in touch and call upon each other with personal and business struggles over the years. i love that i get to facilitate such a valuable experience... it is such a blessing!

are you asking "is this workshop for me?" well, let's see... first, you must be a woman. second, you must be a photographer! you are not required to currently have a photography business, however the majority of our attendees do and i cover quite a bit of crucial business related information. you must be shooting in manual mode and have a good grasp on your equipment. our typical attendees are either in the beginning of their photography careers or have been shooting for quite a while are experiencing serious burn out. i like to teach my workshops in such a way that no matter what level of shooter you are, that the depths of the information can grow you from wherever you are at. lastly, you must be open for change. i am not a shy teacher. i will challenge you. my goal is to really yank on your heart strings. be ready.

also, here are just a few links to blog posts by recent workshop attendees that have been thoughtful enough to share their experiences to give you an idea of the workshops:  http://brittanychandlerphotography.com/wildflowers-workshop-pt-1/   http://kaylacolemanphotography.com/?p=268   http://taylorwhithamphotography.com/2013/12/wildflowers-workshop-moonshine-hill/
